Removal Checklist

Let McAdie and Reeve take the stress out of your move with our comprehensive four-week moving checklist. Follow our step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth and hassle-free moving experience.

4 weeks before..

  • Confirm your removal date and time with your chosen company.
  • Book the removal date off work.
  • Obtain moving supplies: boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers, and packing paper.
  • Update your address with Royal Mail, banks, insurance companies, and other important entities.
  • Sort through each room: decide what to keep, donate, sell, or discard. The move will now begin to feel more real!
  • Arrange tradesmen to disconnect plumbing and electrical items eg large fridge freezers, cookers, washing machine etc.
  • Schedule disconnecting and reconnecting utilities (electricity, water, gas, internet, etc.)

3 weeks before..

  • If completely relocating - Transfer school records and notify your children’s current and future schools & register with new GP and Dentist.
  • Arrange any child and pet care for the removal day, if necessary.
  • Start to run down the contents of your freezer.
  • Make a sketch plan of your new home to determine the placement of furnishings.
  • Think about new curtains/blinds/poles.
  • Complete packing of loft, sheds and garages. Pack what you want to keep and dispose of the rest.

2 weeks before..

  • Start the big pack! Begin with non-essentials such as books, seasonal clothing, and decorations. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to.
  • Begin packing the kitchen – ask yourself what you can manage without for a few weeks. Again, write the name and description
on the boxes. Mark ‘fragile’ as necessary.
  • Inform friends and family of your new address.
  • If you are currently renting, confirm a final walk-through date with the landlord.

1 week before..

  • Organise key exchange timings with your solicitor.
  • Continue your packing and start to bring this process to a close, leaving very little still to do.
  • Pack an essentials box with items you’ll need immediately after moving, such as toiletries, clothes, medications, and important documents.
  • Drain fuel from lawnmowers and other garden equipment.
  • Dismantle any garden equipment such as children’s toys/slides etc.
  • Ensure adequate space for removal vans as close to property as possible.
  • Touch up any paint scuffs, repair any nail holes etc from walls and flooring.
  • Begin disassembling large furniture pieces to save time on moving day.

The day before..

  • Your packing should be completed, except for your overnight essentials. Do not pack cash and jewellery, but keep them with
    you.
  • Ensure the freezer is completely defrosted.
  • Take down pictures, mirrors, curtains and blinds.
  • Disconnect your washing machine and dishwasher.
  • Do a final walkthrough of your current home to ensure nothing is left behind.
  • Clean your current home or arrange for a cleaning service.
  • Check all cupboards, wardrobes, and storage spaces.
  • Protect floors and walls in both your old and new homes during the move.

MOVING DAY!

If you’ve chosen McAdie and Reeve Removals, your move will be seamless and stress-free.

When the movers arrive

  • Go through your inventory list with the movers to confirm all items are accounted for.
  • Provide clear instructions about fragile items and special handling requirements.
  • Show the movers which items are to be loaded last (e.g., essentials box) and unloaded first.
  • Provide your contact details and get the driver's contact information for any updates during transit.

Additional Tips

  • Moving can be physically demanding. Ensure you and your helpers stay hydrated and take regular breaks.
  • Have contact information for the moving company, utility companies, and emergency services readily available.
  • Take photos of your belongings before and after the move to document their condition in case of damage claims.

At your new home

  • Direct movers where to place each box and piece of furniture.
  • Use your floor plan to ensure furniture is placed correctly.
  • Check off items on your inventory list as they are unloaded. Inspect for any damage or missing items before signing off.
  • Unpack your essentials box and set up basic necessities in your new home.
  • Start unpacking room by room, beginning with the kitchen and bedrooms.
